From Milan to Mill: The Story Behind Our Womenswear Window

If you’ve passed by our window recently, you may have noticed something a little different...

Our latest display celebrates a milestone moment for our womenswear team, showcasing the design that earned second place at the Arbiter Milan Su Misura competition last October. Having taken inspiration from the Winter Olympics that have just taken place and International Women’s Day celebrated this past Sunday, it felt like the perfect moment to revisit the piece and the story behind it.

A Competition on the International Stage

The Arbiter Milan Su Misura competition brings together leading tailoring houses from around the world, challenging them to design a bespoke look around a central theme. Last year’s brief drew inspiration from the Winter Olympics, encouraging designers to explore performance, movement and modern elegance through tailoring.

As the first and only female entry in the competitions history, our Head of Womenswear took on the challenge to combine technical cloth with refined tailoring, overall creating a garment that balances structure, fluidity and contemporary design.

The design was ultimately awarded second place, a proud achievement and a testament to the growing strength of womenswear tailoring within the bespoke world.

The Cloth Behind the Design

Central to the garment was cloth from Loro Piana’s Atelier collection. a uniquely developed range designed specifically for women’s tailored garments.

While tailoring cloth has traditionally been developed with menswear in mind, the needs of women’s tailoring are often quite different. Drape, flexibility, colour palette and comfort all play a significant role in how a garment moves and feels when worn.

The Atelier collection represents one of the few dedicated efforts by a major mill to address this gap.

A Visit to Biella

Following the competition, our Head of Womenswear, Hannah, was invited to visit the Loro Piana mill in Biella, just outside Milan, its the historic heartland of Italian wool production.

The visit formed part of an exciting ongoing project. Ahead of the development of a new Atelier cloth bunch in the coming seasons, Loro Piana invited Hannah to discuss what women truly need from tailoring cloth.

From natural stretch in wool fabrics, the balance between structure and softness, colour range and cloth weight, these insights will help shape the next generation of cloths designed specifically for women’s tailoring.

A Growing Space in Tailoring

For many years, bespoke tailoring has largely been defined through a menswear lens. However, the demand for well-cut, thoughtfully designed womenswear pieces is rapidly growing. Developments such as Loro Piana’s Atelier collection signal a shift within the industry, recognising that womenswear tailoring is not simply an adaptation of menswear, but a craft with its own requirements and possibilities.

For us, participating in this conversation, from the Milan competition stage to the mill in Biella, has been both an honour and an exciting glimpse into where womenswear tailoring is headed next.

If you’re passing by, do take a moment to see the piece in our window while it’s on display.
