Whether you're commissioning your very first suit or are already well-acquainted with our services, we are often asked the same questions about the process and what it entails.
We want to ensure you enjoy the experience with our team and ultimately receive a garment that is entirely your own, crafted to be cherished for years to come.
How old is Norton & Sons?
Norton & Sons was founded in 1821 - You can read more about our history here.
What's the difference between Made to Measure and Bespoke?
In 2021 Norton & Sons celebrated 200 years of tailoring and to this day remains at the pinnacle of Bespoke tailoring excellence. Within the Bespoke process, your pattern is drafted entirely from scratch by our Head Cutter and constructed by our specialised tailoring team who assemble each suit intricately by hand. The making of a single Bespoke suit involves up to eleven craftsmen and may take between 60-80 hours.
Norton & Sons Made to Measure service delivers all of the style, choice, and service of Bespoke but in a more streamlined approach. Your Made to Measure pattern is still entirely tailored to your unique set of measurements, however the pattern is simply adjusted from one of our house blocks rather than from scratch. Your suit is then made by our tailoring factory, still specially trained in their craft, our Made to Measure tailors offers a more time-effective solution.
How long does Bespoke usually take?
About 12-15 weeks. This includes your initial consultation and fittings throughout the process.
Are your Bespoke garments made in house?
All of our Bespoke garments are handcrafted in our workshop at No.16 Savile Row by our dedicated in-house tailoring team. Each member of the team has been specially trained in their craft here on Savile Row, maintaining the tradition and standards for which Norton & Sons is renowned.
From the initial pattern drafted by our head cutter to the final hand finished buttonholes, every stage of the process is carried out under one roof. We take great pride in ensuring that each bespoke piece is not only made by hand, but made right here where it all began.
I have an event I need this for - when is the right time to come in?
The sooner the better, we want to give you as much time to spend time with us perfecting the fit of your suit.
How many cloth options can I choose from?
We typically will carry a selection of over 8,000 cloths available from the finest British and European cloth houses. It is our policy to offer predominantly cloths from UK Mills, and the great majority of the woollen fabrics we offer are from the mills of Yorkshire and Scotland. We also use cloths from Italian mills that provide great alternatives for lighter wight and summer cloth uptions.
In addition to the cloths we hold in the shop we have access to many thousands more from our cloth houses, so it is very rare we cannot find a cloth that suits your needs.
How many fittings do I need to attend?
The number of fittings required can vary depending on the individual. For first time clients, the bespoke process typically involves 2 to 4 fittings, allowing us time to refine the pattern and ensure the perfect fit.
Once your pattern has been established, it is retained in our archive meaning that for future commissions, we can use your existing pattern as a foundation - significantly reducing the number of fittings required. In some cases, particularly with well-established patterns, we can proceed directly to a finished garment with minimal or even no fittings at all.
I’m planning on losing weight during the process - will this be an issue?
This is something we are perfectly accustomed to. We want you to look and feel your best and we can carry out any alterations throughout and after the process to accommodate your requirements.
I live in the US - is this an issue?
Not at all, you can see us on one of our scheduled Trunk Show visits to New York or Houston. We typically visit the USA about 5-6 times a year but can always make special arrangements to see you at a more convenient time if needed.
For more information, contact us or take a look at the Trunk Shows page on our website.
Can I claim back the VAT?
If you live outside the UK you can either reclaim your VAT, or we can ship your clothes directly to your non-UK address in which case we would not charge VAT on your items.
In this instance you would be responsible for paying any applicable local taxes and import duties on your garment.
To reclaim your VAT we will provide you with a VAT refund form which you should have stamped at your point of exit from the UK, typically the airport. You must then mail this stamped form back to us and we will process a full refund of the VAT. This can either be repaid directly, or held on account for your next order. You must complete this process and attain the stamp within 3 months of the final invoice to lawfully receive this refund.
Do you make shirts?
We offer a Made to Measure shirtmaking service. The price of your shirt is dictated by the price of the cloth you choose, as well as by any extras such as embroidery which you might choose. Made to Measure shirts start from £325.
Do you do alterations?
We are always delighted to make alterations and repairs to Norton & Sons clothes no matter how old they are (in fact we especially lovely to see old pieces). We will always carry out an initial inspection of the garment to be altered and repaired and provide as accurate an estimate as we can of the cost of any work before it is carried out.
If capacity allows we are also happy to discuss undertaking alterations and repairs for regular customers on garments made elsewhere.
Do I need to book an appointment?
We are delighted to see you without an appointment however if our team are busy we will always prioritise customers who have booked. For fittings booking an appointment is recommended so that we can ensure your garments are ready for your arrival
